When configured this way, SteamVR (both on windows and linux) is fairly unstable and a number of popular applications that use OpenVR will still not work correctly.įor example: both Firefox (nightly) and Chrome will not enumerate OpenVR trackedcontrollers (as gamepads) unless the compositor is present and SteamVR reports 'Ready'. I'm presuming this is because the compositor either blows up or is otherwise set to not run. It does however show general status as 'Not Ready'. It would seem now (as of 5/2017) that changing the `requireHmd` value in the default.vrsettings file works minimally as expected (SteamVR will start). Hoping that we can get something (selfishly) unblocked and (altruistically) made easier for other now and in the future.
I Tweeted to Programmer Joe about this, but I wanted to commemorate it here, since I've struggled for some time on this issue and spoken with others on the same basic issue (HMD-less operation of SteamVR).
